What is with the FA Cup these days, no fans seem that interested.....except for the away fams I guess who usually take more than usual

Only 13,598 for Bolton v Spurs.....just 47 per cent of the Reebok capacity

Only 21,043 for Derby v Blues and there were more than 4,000 BlueNoses were there not ??

Just over 28,000 (usually 40K plus in Prem games at Eastlands) for Manchester City v Stoke

Credit should go to Southampton for a full house of 31,385 v local rivals Pompey (League One team versus a struggling Prem team) yet our own BCFC can't even seem to sell out Prem 'derbies' v Villa anymore

Back in the 60's and 70's during the fine Blues' Cup runs , we regularly pulled in 45,000 - 52,000 for most Cup games at St Andrews especially when we were in the Old 2nd Division and we faced the big clubs like Chelsea, Spurs and Man Utd.....yet 2nd Tier League games would only attract 24,000-27,000 or thereabouts

The trend seems to have reversed these days.....League over Cup

Find it very baffling.......and I mean it's not like the FA Cup matches are massively expensive are they ??

Yet just wait to see if we do manage to get to the FA Cup semi final at Wembley

We'll get an aloocation of something like 32,000 and I bet 55,000 will try and get them

At least fair play to the ST holders this season who will be first in line :applause:

I wonder if it's due to the fact that the competition is won, each year, by one a small selction of teams?. Mostly one of the top 5/6 prem. Perhaps fans are bored because it's unlikely to be them?

finance.

If you ask villa, spurs, everton, man utd, chelsea, liverpool and arsenal at the start of the season if they would rather have the fa cup or top 4 and they would say top 4. Top four means more ££££££ in terms of chamions league rights and advertising etc.

Back in the day it was simple...you won the league title, league cup or fa cup, thats all there was to play for really. Now a team would rather finish fourth than actually win silverwear. Crazy.

Parti, it's been like it for more than 10 years now.

Clubs have, and still do,treat the competition as second-rate and the fans have followed suit.
Did this happen in the good old days? No

Since the advent of the Champions League the same 4 clubs enter and get richer. They then get stonger squads powerful enough to rotate and win FA Cup games. It's no coincidence that the same Big4 win the competition (the only exception are near extinction fortrying to compete). Fans know this and again are not bothered because of it.
Did this happen in the good old days? No

The FA Cup, particularly Round 5 and 6, are totally fragmented with games between Saturday lunchtime and Sunday teatime. The 6th Round is totally staggered and note not one tie at the traditional Sat 3.00.

Wembley was the BIG DAY OUT. Now the semi-finals are there ffs.

A little test for the older fans on here. No looking up, answer straight away.
Who won the FA Cup in 1970? 1973? and 1976?
Who won the FA Cup in 2000? 2003? and 2006?
(this was asked at work a few weeks ago, most of us answered the 70's but hadn't a vlue with the noughties - although we knew to guess at one of the Big4 teams)

Sadly the FA Cup has lost it.

It's the same 4 actually........and no coincidence the Big4 getting more and more richer from the Champions League.

**thumbup You are right Raters........It is the fact the average supporter knows his team have no chance of winning. Before any one of 30 teans could win it which is why the likes of Sunderland, Southampton and West Ham won it as 2nd division clubs.

What an excellent post mate. You are so right. And its true, i can name you the Cup winners in the 70's...but i'd struggle the last decade just gone. The Cup Final used to be the biggest game of the season.

I'm staggered that Bolton v Spurs only pulled in 13,000 - incredible considering it was for a QF place.

ps. 1970 - Chelsea
1973 - Sunderland
1976 - Southampton

hang on, what about last season's f.a cup (correct me if I'm wrong please)... Havant and waterlooville away at liverpool? Barnsley knocking chelsea out? A few years ago that amazing cup final when gerrard pulled it back against west ham? Leeds doing well this year?

I think the magic is still there, just not as often... Yes it's not as good as the old days because of 'the big 4' etc... But theres still some magic left in there yet...

There were closer to 6000 bluenoses on Sat. I'm convinced there were more people than tickets too. People were rammed in standing on the aisles one infront of the other because of lack of space.

"What about last season's FA Cup" you say. Well won by a Big4 against another Big4 in the final.
"That amazing final..Gerrard" you say. Well won by a Big4.
"Leeds doing well this year" you say. They're now out and the Big4 club is the overwhelming favourites.

Don't bury your head in the sand. There is a fact for all to see............the lowering of attendances year on year.

THe FACup has lost it's magic due to the greed of the Big4 and the greed of the Football Association letting television do what they want with it and playing the 2 semis at Wembley.

Sadly the FA Cup is now a very poor relation to the League.

Totally agree with you about the semi's being played at Wembley - that heps devalue it as well imo - should only be the final there.

Yeah, it's definately down to the brainwashing of the Prem and CL that that's the be-all and end-all.

And it gets even more frustrating. On TalkSport now, they're on about a new motion where it's been proposed to have a play-off for the 4th place in the Prem for the next 4 teams below.

Why don't they have a play-off for 4th place and the FA Cup winners - the losers then go into the Europa League?

Also, whilst they're at it, drop the League Cup. That way more focus is again placed upon the FA Cup and less demands on players over the course of a season.

Chelsea beat Everton, Everton aren't 'top 4' but rather top 6.

The magic is there... Portsmouth vs Cardiff as the final a couple of years back... its just the financial side of things mean that people cant afford to have to pay out extra for cup games, ontop of season tickets/home tickets.

spot on... people just look through rose tinted glasses about football and years gone by!!

there have always been a small amount of teams (Arsenal, Liverpool, man u etc) who have made up the semis... and finals, however every now and then a fairytale team breaks ranks...most recently Pompey.... and last year Everton made the final, before that Cardiff, and Milwall too!! but people would rather talk of the "good old days" as if they were that much different to today’s game... not really just different team dominating!!

Football is what you make of it!! we had an absolutely brilliant day on Saturday, a proper away day, with plenty of banter with blues and derby fans!! and we got to watch a proper cup match... lower league opposition taking it to the top tier boys... Sunday saw palace do the same... earlier rounds saw Leeds knock out the scousers and run spurs very very close!!

I think the crowds are down due to a mixture of people’s expectations, and finances... for me its finances... I went to Derby as it was cheap and the train was cheap... it was also close enough to get back at a reasonable time!!

Across the country people are losing their jobs, struggling to pay bills etc... people just can't afford to go a couple of extra games these days!!

*edit* sorry just re read that post and it was full of spelling mistakes... a bit hyped up lol

We all know these days clubs outside of the 'big four' don't stand much of a chance of actually winning the cup.

But there is a real chance of finishing as runners up, better than nothing.

2003 Southampton
2004 Millwall
2006 Westham
2008 Cardiff ( winners Portsmouth )
2010 Aston Villa ( winners Birmingham City ) :D

I still think the magic is there, for me anyway.

OK Jassy, then why are the attendances falling year on year?
Why has PartisanBCFC started this thread?

The FACT is falling attendances from Round 3 onwards. No rose-tinting at all, the 5th Round always commanded big gates up to about 10 years ago, maybe longer, but not now.

This weekend, the FA Cup 5th Round attracted
21k at Derby
28k at Man C
18k at Reading
13k at Bolton
16k at Fulham

Remember only 6 weeks ago Blues only got 9k.

Don't argue with the facts. The FA Cup has been losing it for years.

I wasn't arguing that gates weren't falling, I was saying that I don't think the magic has gone from the cup...

I agree that the gates are falling but I don't think that it is due to the magic of the cup... I think it is due to the saturisation of football on the box... and the financial side of things (as stated in the earlier post)

as fans we all look back fondly at years gone by... I have great memories from mid 80's to early 90's... but I wouldn't want the football to return to that standard!!

well spotted pati... reading knocked out scousers didn't they!! But Leeds knocked out man u too... so the magic of the cup is alive and well :-)

People make conscious choices about how they spend their money.

And the FA Cup - for say a Premier League fan - is possibly a way of saving some money by opting out.

This is compounded by many of the big four/five clubs playing second or third string players from Round 3. It re-inforces the decision by fans not to go.

If my club don't think it's that important, perhaps it isn't, is how I think many reason it out.

Ways to rejuvinate interest amongst the bigger clubs is obviously financial.

Blues getting this far have earned about £300k, if they'd been selected for a TV match they'd have equalled that in one go.

The TV money on the next negotiations must shove the prize fund up drastically.

At present:

Quote:

Third Round Proper winners (32) £67,500
Fourth Round Proper winners (16) £90,000
Fifth Round Proper winners (8) £180,000
Sixth Round Proper winners (4) £360,000
Semi Final winners (2) £900,000
Semi Final runners-up (2) £450,000
Final winners (1) £1,800,000
Final runners-up (1) £900,000

If the winners got £5 million or some such silly figure, and ALL TV screening fees were shared by each participant in that round, we might have a different ball game.

It does come down I think to the marginalising of the bigger clubs, of this competition. The Prem are now even going to consider a play-off for the 4th European place. More money for them now that the 39th game has bit the dust.

The FA needs to combat that with a more agressive and financially worthwhile competition.

Too many old soaks in blazers up there and too much Premier league influence at the table.

What is with the FA Cup these days, no fans seem that interested.....except for the away fams I guess who usually take more than usual

Spot on. I had the same conversation with my brother the other day. I couldn't even remember who was in the final last year, let alone who won it.

The cup final was a huge occasion in the past beacasue it was about the only live club game on the telly. So we all watched it. I do not watch it when the finalist are from the so-called big 4, but I did watch the cardiff one a couple of years back.
